About

Alex Watson is a guitarist, composer, and DJ currently based in the UK.

Born in Hexham, Northumbria in 1988, Alex moved to Yorkshire and grew up in Pocklington. He started playing classical guitar whilst at school, studying with Mark Currey before picking up the electric. During sixth form Alex took private lessons with Al Morrison, who was a key ingredient in introducing him to jazz harmony and improvised music.

Aged 18 after finishing school, Alex decided to move to London to concentrate on studying music, and enrolled on a programme at Trinity College of Music. There he was lucky to study for a year with esteemed musicians such as Mick Foster, Mike Outram and Buster Birch, where he began to build a foundation in jazz.

Returning North, Alex moved to Leeds to study a degree in Jazz Performance at Leeds College of Music. There he was lucky to study under tutelage of many esteemed musicians such as Jez Franks, Jamie Taylor, Jiannis Pavlidis, Jamil Sheriff and Kathy Dyson. There Alex developed an interest in composition and also began DJing and promoting events.

Alongside Louis Peakall, together as ‘The Soul Solution DJs’ the duo ran a number of events in the fields of jazz, funk and hip hop, such as Evidence at the HiFi Club and Get Down! at the Northern Monkey, all in Leeds. Alex also enjoyed time working as an editor for AllAboutJazz.com during 2010.

Never confined to one genre Alex’s musical interests have always been broad, spanning from jazz to hip hop. He is currently working leading his own jazz quartet and plays in a number of other groups, from function work to studio projects. Always open to new performance opportunities, Alex is available for live and studio work, as a guitarist, composer or arranger.
